Sioux or Dakota Indian Tipi's

foto van Tipi

The Sioux , the popular name for Dakota, is a group of Indian tribes in the Mid-West of the U.S.A., who speak the same language.
Their outfits became representative for what an Indian looks like.
Despite brave resistance (a victorie in 1876 on General Custer in the little Big-Horn Valley). The different tribes were conquered during the 19th Century, by the Americans. Since that moment the Sioux live in reservations.

They designed a beautifull Tipi and I use their pattern. They knew how to regulate the temperature within the Tipi, warm enough in the winter and cool in the summer. This has a lot to do with the differnt linings; a Summer-inside and a Winter-inside.

The material I use is mildewproof and of a waterproof canvas quality. It's weight is 330 grams per square meter.

So a Tipi with a cross section of 22 ft.weights approx. 26 kilograms/ 57 pounds.

It's these measurements that appear to me, to give the best climate. The fire burns quietly, and this size is big enough to allow you to move/walk behind the people, sitting near the fireplace.
At the lower bottom, 35 loops and wooden pegs connected with a two inch cord will make the Tipi very thight and stormprotected.

The Tipicover is delivered with a door, with two wooden sticks in it.
The cover and door are packed together in a strong and waterproof bag.
The delivery includes:

  1. A pegdown cord
  2. a fireproof anchorrope
  3. the 2 horizontal cords
  4. 2 groundanchors (steal)
  5. 40 wooden pegs
  6. a rubber hammer

Ofcourse I can make any size of Tipi you want!

Some pictures from 'the life' inside a TIPI

The winterlining 1.60 meter high

This material is the same as the cover, made from 15 parts, exactly following the shape of the outsidecover. A plastic part of the lining always touches the soil.
The lining is pegged down with 16 aluminium D-rings and pins and hangs at 1 meter, from the floor on a horizontal rope. At 1.60 meter from the floor, the lining hangs with 35 pair of cords on the second horizontal rope.
The liningdoor is made of flexibel cotton, easy to close and going in and out.
It's possible to take the door apart from the heavy lining to wash it.

The summerlining 1 meter high

The cotton is strong and flexibel. The lining is a bit oversized at the top. You can pull it together with a cord, untill it fits well. A plastic part is on the soil, to keep the draft away.
This Summerlining has the possibility to get attached to the Winterlining, this for extra isolation if it's cold.

Extra assecoires:
  • Recycable floorplastic 2mtr. wide, price € 2,25 Euro per meter.
  • A bag for accessoires with a waterproofbottom (see photo aside)
  • Tips for putting up the Tipi + tips for the inside climat.
