Liberation War in Pabna

26th March 1971. District Commissioner Nurul Kader Khan of Pabna asked for the people to make protection against the Pakistani Army. People responded and gathered in Pabna Police Line. Then he distributed arms among the people. The same day the people of Krshinapur broke Curfew and they gathered for the Janaja prayer of ‘martyr Sukur’ killed by the raider. In the mean time a group of 8/10 raiders attacked and started firing continuously. By this attack Abdus Samad was martyred at the same village and Shaikh Badiuzzaman, Moulana Ibrahim Khalil and Samer were seriously injured. On the reflection the police force along with the people crying for freedom attacked the raiders. Guns were started roaring.

 
In 27th and 28th March Pakistani Army marched for the Telephone Exchange and within a few moments they took the command without any conflict. But the people could not take it easily they attacked against the Pak-Army. The fight’s duration was more than two hours. 20 people of Pak-Army was killed by the freedom fighters. At 11 a.m. on 29th March the Pakistani air force started air attacking. A fighter plain started firing over the city. Most of the houses destructed for this attack. Besides the raiders killed more than 200 people in Handial, 976 in Demra and more than 400 in Satbaria.

Shibaji master, Moulana Kasimuddin Ahmed, Habildar of police Abul Kasim were brutally killed by the Pak–Army. After that more than 50 police were killed in the same way. From 30th March to 10th April Pabna was free. On 10th April the raiders came back again with more brutal appearance. They fired houses of both sides of the road . A brutal genocide started not only in Pabna but all over Bangladesh also. Pabna Edward College, Pabna Circuit House, Dac-Banglo were captured and made the military camp by the Pak-Army. During that period hundreds of women were raped, thousands of people were killed.

Entrance of the Freedom Fighters: On 14th July the Freedom Fighters trained in India entered into Pabna. From that time the movement of war was changed. On 8th August Freedom Fighter Selim was caught by the raiders and martyred. Under the commanding of Bakul, Babi, Shajahan, Iqbal, Shantu Pabna was divided into parts and they with their components attacked from corners of Pabna. On December 12, 1971 under commanding of Rafiqul Islam Bakul Sujanagar was attacked by the freedom fighters. After two days Pak-Army fled away from Pabna. 13th December Sujanagar became independent. On 16th December Freedom fighters surrounded the Pak-Army and then 16th to 18th December 1971 Freedom fighter and Pak-army fought face to face. After two days war Pabna got independence finally. 18th December is the day of independence of Pabna.
