History

Once when Lord Brahma was doing penance Lordess Saraswathi came in full force in the form River Vegavadhi to destroy the penance. Lord Brahma approached Lord Vishnu to help Him. Lord Vishnu posed there in sayana form obstructing the river. Unable to proceed further River Vegavadhi stopped there.  In almost all the temples where Perumal poses in Sayanam, the sayanam will be from left to right. Whereas only in this temple the sayanam will be from right to left. Another instance in this temple is Once when Thirumezhisai Alwar was staying here along with his disciples, one of the disciple named kannikkannan also stayed here. Kannikkannan was a great poet and was reciting songs only on Lord Vishnu. The king came to know about Kannikkannan and asked him to recite a song on king's name. Kannikkannan refused and was sent out of his dynasty. Thirumezhisai Alwar came to know about and thought he should also join kannikkannan. Thirumezhisai Alwar went to Lord and told that he is also leaving with kannikkannan so take Your mat (Seshnag) and come behind us. Immediately Lord  left the place and followed Thirumezhisai Alwar. When the three of them left the dynasty, the entire dynasty was in dark. The king came to know about his mistake and immediately went to Thirumezhisai Alwar and Kannikkannan and apologized. Then the Lord was asked to go back to Kanchi by Thirumezhisai Alwar. This incident is celebrated as a festival here in the Tamil month of Thai on Magam star. The temple was the birth place of Poigai Alwar.
