Marathon Training

Injury Prevention

·        Building Slowly

Our targets are SMART

Specific: To complete a marathon.

Measurable: Can be measured by completing a marathon by a certain date and/or recording a certain time in doing it. Progress can also measured in building up to the marathon e.g. training distances/loading, races. Other elements such as weight loss – if that is a goal -, perceived exertion can also be measured.

Achievable: Goals should be stretching but attainable. This provides a positive feeling rather than negative. Also reduces possibility of injury. Short term tasks can form part of what is achieved.

Realistic: This is about the actions that the individual can take in improving their performance or achieving goals e.g. training, wearing correct shoes, etc. Cannot include elements outside of control e.g. weather, terrain etc

Time bound:   Running is very much time related. Usually ends with a marathon to be run within a certain time period e.g.16 weeks build up plan or a time to complete the race e.g. 4 hours.
